Eighty percent of those exposed to the virus SARS COV-2 have minor or no symptoms. Without exception these are the younger individuals.  The remaining 20% of patients present with a broad swath of symptoms of variable duration.  Approximately five percent of these will die.

Older individuals have the most susceptibility to COVID-19.  Other risk factors of hypertension and diabetes are the first diseases seen with age, although those effected are not always older.  Obesity is another factor, not always age related, which allows increased susceptibility to COVID-19.

Preexisting infection can explain a lack of available immune components necessary to fight this virus. This is consistent with the extreme variability in the course of the disease. Those producing some levels of immunity would recover more slowly. Those dying from COVID-19 would have a higher parasitic drag.

Insufficient nutrition due to parasitic drag could easily limit immune response.  The latest studies on aging suggest an epigenetic rather than genetic causation.  The mechanism responsible would entail a lack of specific amino acids.   Even perfect RNA cannot build protein (immune or otherwise) without the availability of all needed amino acids.

In 1907, Metchnikoff theorized aging as caused by rogue bacterial colonization of the colon. The theory fell out of favor because subsequent researchers could not isolate a toxin which “must have been” involved.

In 2010, Gerontologist Ro Blake suspected the cause of aging was actually a competition for resource. Blake observed that certain amino acids were being broken-down for energy by epithelial cells in the small intestine.  This was occurring at the same time the identical amino acids were being removed from collagen to provide for immune and peptide production.

Blake imagined this as part of a bodily process to deny nutrients to downstream bacteria.

What needs further study?

In the 2012 clinical trials (and at highest doses) herpes outbreaks were noticed among those with known existing herpes infection.  These outbreaks would not be repeated, subsequently.  As the outbreak mechanism of herpes virus is known, it was assumed that at higher doses this compound may have cleared the virus.  Could what appeared to the virus to be breakdown of collagen have the virus walking into an immune system that is not preoccupied with an existing infection?

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a condition involving plaque formation in the human brain, usually but not always, occurring in much older individuals.   Plaque formation has recently been identified as a secondary immune function to immobilize pathogens.  As the standard immune system generally cannot get past the blood brain barrier plaque may occur in response to a long-term herpes infection.  Older individuals, especially, do not have much collagen to spare. Without the break-down of collagen “all clear signal,” herpes may remain within the brain.

Older individuals have a much more difficult time in dealing with COVID-19.  Could a nutritional supplement prove useful in aiding recovery from COVID-19?
